The Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking at Eastern New Mexico University presents “Las Arañas” written by Leonard Madrid.
PORTALES, NM –February 2019– Eastern New Mexico University presents the world premiere of “Las Arañas” written by ENMU Alumnus Leonard Madrid. The premiere will be held Feb 28th through March 2nd at 7 p.m. and March 3rd at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre Center.
The setting of “Las Arañas” is in New Mexico and is a folktale involving love, women healers, and giant spiders with elements of horror and fantasy. The cast will consist of four to eight ENMU students. The setting takes place on the grounds of Las Arañas, mythical monsters who crave the blood of the wicked. "This is a unique opportunity to see the world premiere of a new play written by a Portales native and an ENMU alum. The story combines folklore, drama, humor and horror in a way that celebrates New Mexican culture and contemporary social concerns," said director Jon Barr, Associate Professor of Digital Filmmaking and ENMU.
The playwright, Madrid, has an MFA in dramatic writing, a BA in lighting and set design, and a BFA at Eastern New Mexico University in theatre.
