Teresa Nance and her late husband John were honored Saturday as the 2013 Pioneers of the Year during Heritage Days.
Here is a copy of the speech Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Director Karl Terry read about her and other pioneers at Saturday’s ceremony:
“Here in Roosevelt County we’ve been blessed with a legacy of folks who taught us what it means to be a good neighbor. From branding time to a birth or death or maybe just a vehicle breakdown on a lonely road our neighbors are always there for us here in our county.
“There is one group of people in our community that believes the old ways are sometimes still the good ways and they work to keep us connected to our heritage (the Roosevelt County Pioneer Association).

Pioneer of the Year, Teresa Nance, with Karl Terry at the Heritage Days celebration Saturday afternoon at the Portales City Park.
“This past year we lost Tommy Bennett and Jane Mauk Hilliard, who were both active with the association. Our Heritage Days Car Show this year is dedicated to four individuals, Kay Harmon, Dr. Kent Hilliard and Ronald and Fred Anthony, who were all long-time members of the Sun Valley Country Car Club, and all four died this past year. We’re all going to miss these people.
