• Winners announced in Virtual Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Contest

    October 22, 2020
The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce announced the winners in the Virtual Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Contest today. Over $1,300 was awarded to 16 different winners.

First place in the Age 1-4 category went to Nayelli Flores who turned her pumpkin into a unicorn with its tongue stuck out. Second place went to Jaeleigh Kia for her beautiful multi-colored pumpkin. Finally, Lylah Puls was third and got noticed for the big ears on the pumpkin creation she brought to life.

In the 5-8 age category, Elijah Reynolds was first by incorporating lots of candy in a creative way in his jack-o-lantern’s face. Louis Addison was second with a great paint job and creative decorations on his pumpkin. Kenleigh Cradock took third with black cats and bats as her theme.

Xandria carved a great looking ghost into her pumpkin to win first in the 9-13 category, Rheana was second with a sick pumpkin that had possibly had too much Halloween candy. Andrew Duran rounded out the category in third with a friendly looking green pumpkin.

Alayna Parker-Zion got crazy with all the designs she cut into her pumpkin and took away first place. Faith Marler was second with a spider design that looks too real. Third was Savannah Sotelo was third with an elaborate movie themed entry.

In the adult division there was lots of competition and the choices were tough. Josh-ua (Van) Thang Bawi was first with another multi-panel entry that was both scary and intricate. Yvette Tapia was second with a COVID-19 theme that promotes mask-wearing, even for pumpkins. Third place went to Sarah Rodriquez, who employed a New Mexico chile theme with a yellow pumpkin sporting a red Zia symbol with both red and green chile characters waving.

Best of Show was a tie between Van Thang Bawi’s first place adult entry and Riley Paige Inge’s entry in the 1-4 age category. Something tells us 2-year-old Riley might have had a little adult help in creating her wonderful Cinderella pumpkin carriage.

The second part of the Chamber’s Virtual Halloween continues through noon Oct. 30 with an online costume contest. Locate the event on the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page, click on the “discussion” tab and post your entry. You can use just your child’s first name if you like. You can also post in a pet category as well.
