Business of the Month - Do Drop In
Joann Rackler thought she was buying a coffee shop when she acquired the Do Drop In in the fall of 2006. But she now knows that she really bought a sandwich shop that happens to sell coffee.
Joann has added some great items to the menu such as the grilled Panini which contains fresh basil, tomato and mozzarella cheese. In addition to sandwiches she also has a variety of salads, frito pie and soup during the winter. Another special treat is the variety of hand scooped ice cream – if you haven’t tried it yet, the mocha almond fudge is fantastic.
A great secret to the coffee shop is the beautiful patio in the back. During the summer, patrons love to sit in the tranquil garden and enjoy their food. The patio is also a great place for entertainment. On Sept. 12, Andy and Don will be performing music from 7-9 pm. So if you are looking for some great food, great company, and great music, load up the family and head to the Do Drop.
Thank you, Joann and Mike, for giving us a unique and comfortable place to enjoy and congratulations on being named Business of the Month for September.
Volunteers of the Month - United Methodist Women

When the Bike and Build organization rode into town on July 29th, the United Methodist Women were waiting with open arms – and lots of food!! The Chamber director received an email from one of the B&B Leaders saying that the riders would be spending the night in Portales and asked if we knew somewhere they could sleep and shower and if some organization would feed them. It only took one call to get a “YES!” A call went out to Frankye King (center) who is the president of the United Methodist Women.
Within a few hours she had received more “YESES” from Jo Beth Massey (right), chair of the Esther Circle, and Sharon Cissell (left), volunteer from the Friendship Circle, to provide food. The Esther Circle cooked dinner on the 29th for around 50 people including the riders, Habitat for Humanity volunteers and circle members. The Friendship Circle provided a breakfast at 6:00 the morning of the 30th.
Frankye didn’t stop with the United Methodist Women. She also recruited the mayor who attended the dinner and presented the group with a proclamation naming July 29th Bike and Build Day in Portales. The group had never received such an honor and were absolutely thrilled. ENMU vice president for student affairs, Judith Haislett, offered Bernalillo Hall for the riders to spend the night. After sleeping on floors in churches and other buildings throughout their trek, to sleep in beds and have plenty of showers was a special treat. Following breakfast, the city police and ambulance service escorted the riders to the edge of town as they continued their journey to California.
A special thanks to everyone who helped host the Bike and Build youth but especially to the ladies of the United Methodist Women. Congratulations for being named Volunteers of the Month.
