Jan. 31, 2008 New Mexico Ag Expo Offers Dairy Heifer Sale Portales, N.M. — The Premium Grade and Registered Dairy Heifer Sale will return this year to the New Mexico Ag Expo. The sale will begin at 3 p.m. Feb. 27 with more than 200 two-year-old registered and non-registered Holstein heifers going on the auction block. Randy Bouldin of Portales Livestock and Dairy Sale will be in charge of the auction. According to Bouldin, many of the heifers are coming from the surrounding areas of eastern New Mexico and west Texas. Patrick Kircher, Roosevelt County Extension Agent, said the heifers are sure to be of good quality as there is a big demand in the area for quality cattle, due to the increase in the dairy industry. Eastern New Mexico has one of the fastest growing dairy industries in the nation. Roosevelt County has almost 50 dairies. The 2008 New Mexico Ag Expo, whose major sponsors include Plateau Wireless and Farmers Paxton Insurance Agency, is expected to draw more exhibitors and spectators than ever before. The event is designed to highlight New Mexico’s agricultural industry. For more information on the dairy heifer sale, contact Portales Livestock and Dairy Sale at 356-4740.
