New Mexico Ag Expo Offers Dairy Heifer Sale Portales, N.M. — A Premium Grade and Registered Dairy Heifer Sale has become an annual event at the New Mexico Ag Expo. This year the sale will begin at 3 p.m. Feb. 28 with more than 200 two-year-old registered and non-registered Holstein heifers going on the auction block. Randy Bouldin of Portales Livestock and Dairy Sale will be in charge of the auction. According to Bouldin, many of the heifers are coming from the surrounding areas of eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Floyd McAlister, Roosevelt County Extension Agent, said the heifers are sure to be of good quality as there is a big demand in the area for quality cattle, due to the increase in the dairy industry. Eastern New Mexico has one of the fastest growing dairy industries in the nation. Roosevelt County has 46 dairies. The 2006 New Mexico Ag Expo, whose major sponsors include Plateau Wireless and Hamilton Automotive Group, is expected to draw more exhibitors and spectators than ever before. The event is designed to highlight New Mexico’s agricultural industry. For more information on the dairy heifer sale, contact Portales Livestock and Dairy Sale at 356-4740. |
