Ag Expo Providing Latest in Seminars and Workshops

Portales, N.M. - The 10th annual New Mexico Ag Expo, sponsored by Plateau Wireless and New Mexico Bank and Trust, will feature the latest educational seminars and continuing education opportunities in technology, chemical usage, ranching, government regulations, estate planning, dairy management and bio security for agricultural businessmen and women throughout the region.

The seminars and continuing education units will be held on the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Chris Allison, NMSU Range Improvement Task Force presenting a Ranching During Drought seminar in the armory sponsored by Ag New Mexico Farm Credit Services. Allison will talk about the need for drought preparedness plans, drought effects on range vegetation, how soon can a rancher can restock.

Wednesday, Feb. 28 will include an Estate Planning seminar with Glen O'Rear at 10 a.m. sponsored by FirstBank. Estate planning can benefit families in agriculture by helping them retain more of their family assets when the owner generation changes. There are special rules and regulations, which apply to these situations that O'Rear, will address.

A Dairy Employee Management forum by Miguel Morales of Monsanto Dairy Business will be held in the Cacahuate Room of the Armory on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The area of labor management on a dairy is complex and communication is critical. Morales will present a series examples that could be used and will discuss some of his own experiences.

Dr. Richard Lee, NMSU extension weed specialist, will be hosting a seminar for Pesticide and Chemical Update in the Armory's Yucca Room at 2 p.m. on Tuesday sponsored by Sunland, Inc. One continuing education credit will be given for this seminar.

Each year at the Ag Expo, Lee gives an annual pesticide and chemical update. This seminar provides the latest information about chemicals and pesticides to those whose daily operations relay on their usage.

Tuesday will conclude with a continuing educational unit on Worker Protection Standards and Regulations by NMSU Inspector Greg Ferguson. This seminar is a refresher course on producer requirements dealing with the worker protection act. The EPA is now performing audits randomly to make sure operators are abiding by requirements.
