10th Annual NM Ag Expo Feb. 26 & 27

Portales, NM -- Beginning this Tuesday, vendors will have the latest agricultural products and services on display at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds in Portales, NM, for the 10th annual New Mexico Ag Expo sponsored by Plateau Wireless and New Mexico Bank and Trust.

Organizers expect more than 8,000 visitors during the two-day show Tuesday Feb. 26 and Wednesday, Feb. 27. The trade show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and will feature more than 450 exhibitors in over 80 categories of farming, ranching and dairy equipment, supplies and services.

The Expo will kick off with the Farm/City/Eastern New Mexico University/Cannon Air Force Base Annual Banquet which will be held in the Ballroom of the Campus Union Building of ENMU at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25. Thursday Night Live will be the featured entertainment with local native Summer Savage. Tickets for the banquet are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce or Farm Bureau Office.

Tuesday activities for Feb. 26 include the Mobile Dairy Classroom at 9:30 a.m. in the Show Arena, sponsored by Calftrac Custom Calf Raising. Orin Barnes will be conducting a horse training demonstration in the Round Pen at 10 a.m. and the Working Stock Dogs demonstration at 2 p.m., sponsored by Joe’s Boot Shop.

Dr. Chris Allison of New Mexico State University, will conduct a “Ranching During Drought” seminar beginning at 11 a.m. in the Armory’s Cacahuate Room, sponsored by Ag New Mexico Farm Credit Services, ACA.

The Portales Rotary Club’s annual Chuck Wagon Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sheep Barn and is being sponsored by Portales Livestock Auction. Tickets cost $10 and will be on sale at the door. The Antique Tractors will be parading around the Midway at 11:30 a.m. on both days. The tractors will also be on display on the Expo grounds throughout the show.

At 2 p.m., a pesticide and chemical update seminar by Dr. Richard Lee will be held in the Armory’s Yucca Room, sponsored by Sunland, Inc. The “Worker Protection Standards and Regulations” seminar will follow at 3 p.m. in the same location and is being sponsored by High Plains Ethanol, Inc. Both seminars count as one continuing educational unit.

Wednesday’s events will begin with the Ranch Horse Association of America’s sanctioned Working Ranch Horse Competition in the Special Events Arena of the Fairgrounds beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The competition is sponsored by PNM and Bill Johnston Auctioneers and Cattle Baron Restaurants.

Mesalands Community College’s Horseshoeing and Blacksmithing demonstrations will start at 10 a.m. in the Show Arena and is sponsored by Ag Marketing and Management.
Glen O’Rear will conduct an “Estate Planning Seminar” in the Armory’s Cacahuate Room at 10 a.m. and is sponsored by FirstBank. Extension Economist Connie Moyers will follow with the “Cooking Ahead for One, Two or a Crew” demonstration at 11 a.m., sponsored by Xcel Energy and Roosevelt County Electric.

Miguel Morales will present a “Dairy Employee Management” seminar at 1 p.m. in the Armory’s Cacahuate Room sponsored by Don Pool Construction. Dr. Michael Looper, NMSU Extension Dairy Specialist, will follow with his “Bio Security for Dairy and Beef Operations” at 2 p.m. at the same location. The seminar is sponsored by Garvey Processing.

Spectators can register to win a 16 foot stock trailer on both days of the show. Entry forms are available at the gate. Admission to the Expo and all demonstrations and seminars are free.
