Tab Release NM Ag Expo Features Horseshoeing Demonstrations The Mesalands Community College of Tucumcari, N.M., will be demonstrating horseshoeing techniques at the New Mexico Ag Expo, sponsored by Plateau Wireless and New Mexico Bank and Trust, Feb. 26 and 27 at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds in Portales, NM. The demonstrations will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 26 and again on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. and are sponsored by Ag Marketing and Management, Inc. Mesalands Community College offers an associate degree in farrier science, commonly called blacksmithing and horseshoeing. According to Farrier Science Instructor Nate Allen of Mesalands Community College, visitors to the demonstrations will see trimming and shoeing along with blacksmithing skills. We will have a horse on hand and well actually build the shoes to fit the horse, Allen said. This shows how one can fit a horse with shoes for special needs and how it was done in years past. This will be the fourth year Mesalands has demonstrated their students skills at the Ag Expo. We usually have a really good reception, Allen added. We have had some students that have decided to come to Mesalands for the farrier program after viewing our presentation at the Ag Expo. As a bonus, visitors will gain an understanding of various uses of horses and the shoes used on horses for different jobs. Spectators may learn some specialty and therapeutic needs of horses, as well. Questions are always welcome too. To register antique tractors for the Expo, contact Chester
