Professional Horse and Dog Trainer Featured at Expo

Orin Barnes, a professional horse trainer for over 30 years from Canyon, Texas., will demonstrate his techniques at the New Mexico Ag Expo Feb. 26 and 27, sponsored by Plateau Wireless and New Mexico Bank and Trust, at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds. Joe’s Boot Shop will sponsor the horse training and horsemanship workshop on Tues., Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. in the Round Pen.

Barnes has produced many AQHA champions, superior and high point horse awards through Barnes Training Stables. He currently holds five judging cards and has judged the Nationals in Sweden, New Zealand and Australia.

“My goal has been to take quality horses and spend the time to make them the best,” Barnes said. “I have dedicated my life to making both the horses and horsemen better.”
Barnes will also host a working stock dogs workshop Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Round Pen. Barnes trains dogs for practical work and trailing.

“In my ventures in life, I have found training stock dogs and horses go hand in hand,” Barnes stated. “Where one is weak the other is strong and when they are used together they can be a very strong force. Especially for the ranchers and farmers with small operations that need help moving livestock around.”
